Agate stones offer a distinctive and fascinating display of colour, no one stone is the same with each encompassing its own unique pattern, making them very collectable.
Agate forms when microscopic quartz crystals are deposited in layers, often banded with members of quartz, chalcedony or jasper. When cut transversely these agates show a succession of parallel lines seen in our agate cut base slices and agate slices, giving a banded appearance to the section. Many agates are hollow, since deposition has not proceeded far enough to fill the cavity seen in our agate geodes, and in such cases the last deposit commonly consists of quartz, with the crystals directed towards the free space so as to form a crystal-lined cavity, or geode.
In antiquity in many cultures it was considered a stone of protection.
