Origin of Name & Mythology: The name originates from the Greek "smaragdos", which, in antiquity, appears to have been used for a variety of green stones. Ancient Egyptians believed emerald to be a symbol of fertility and life, and it was regarded by the Aztecs as a symbol of seasonal rebirth. Alchemists considered it to be the stone of Mercury, messenger of the gods, and therefore of divine inspiration. Traditionally, emerald was held in the mouth to cure disentry, and worn to prevent epilepsy and give protection against evil spirits and demons. It was used as an aid to women in childbirth, and taken internally (by grinding it to powder and mixing with water or wine) to improve eyesight and cure poisoning, as well as treating fevers and panic, and to stop haemorrage. Like aquamarine, in the Middle Ages emerald was believed to reveal the truth. It was also used to foretell the future, protect the wearer from enchantments, sharpen the wits and aid public speaking (Marbodei, Camilli, and others).
