Origin of Name & Mythology: Named in 1789 by Abraham Gottlieb Werner from the Greek word "kyanos", meaning "blue," the common colour of the species. The French spelling, "Cyanite", was commonly used by mineralogists through much of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Kyanite is deeply spiritual and healing crystal found in a variety of colours. They all have a core set of attributes, as well is individual properties. All kyanites are said to have a cool, unforced energy. They facilitate meditation and aid in a quick transition between states of consciousness.
Kyanite is believed to be useful in contacting angels, higher powers and spirit guides. It is known as an alignment stone. Physically, kyanite is said to alleviate pain from muscle pains and muscle conditions, as well as problems in the tendons and ligaments.
The fan-shape of black kyanite creates a powerful directional energy and can be used in either direction. Black kyanite is believed to be good for removing unwanted energies, releasing attachments and channelling positive energy. It is also said to open and clear all the chakras and burn off negative karmic energy.

Blue kyanite opens the Throat Chakra, as well as the Bindu Visarga. It is believed to open up channels of communication and allow us to express ourselves calmly. Blue kyanite is also believed to open, cleanse and active all of the chakras.

Green kyanite is an amazing crystal for the Heart Chakra. It has a similar effect to blue kyanite on all the chakras but has a much more expansive energy. It strengthens the heart both physically and emotionally, teaching us both love and compassion. It encourages psychic and spiritual development, and can give gentle protection and support without 'heaviness'.
Physically, green kyanite is believed to have a positive influence on the immune system. It is recommended for sinus problems, asthma, epilepsy and to reduce swelling.

Orange kyanite is very dynamic. It floods the body with a deep orange light, the energy moving upwards like bubbles in a fish tank, clearing stagnation and inertia, and energising as it goes. Everything is lifted – the mind and body as well as the spirits, as it motivates us to move not only forward, but higher as well. Symbolically, it represents the Six of Wands (Staves) in tarot, when everything we have worked for is blasting off like a rocket.
