Origin of Name & Mythology: Named after the type location; Herkimer Co., New York.
A type of quartz crystal, always double terminated and of dazzling clarity, often full of rainbows. It has similar properties to clear quartz. In addition, it stimulates psychic gifts, and because of the pure light it brings in, it is used to clear the Chakras, and particularly aligns with the Upper Crown Chakra. It is considered an “attunement” stone as it is a powerful aid in attuning to another person, one’s environment, or the highest spiritual levels, as well as helping us to gain past-life information. Also a good aid in treating and eliminating electromagnetic stress.
Herkimer diamond in general is a crystal of vision – both esoterically, and physically – so helps us ascertain the way forward as well as improving eyesight (at least temporarily). This quality becomes more down-to-earth and personal with the Pakistan variety.
These crystals originate from the Afghanistan/Pakistan border rather than the Herkimer Mine in the USA, giving the energy a somewhat different quality, whether or not it has included petroleum. The petroleum has a golden colour and often fluoresces orange under UV light.
Sometimes called “petroleum enhydro” in some articles. This is a misnomer – enhydro literally means “containing water”.
With petroleum inclusions, the crystals are more concerned with earthly matters and less interested in the stars, probably because petrol is carbon- (organic-) based, and therefore more connected with our planet. The crystal’s focus is still on the Crown and Upper Crown Chakras, but it anchors the energy in the Heart and Solar Plexus, then connects it with the Earth itself, creating a heaven-earth connection. The golden colour means it’s warmer and friendlier than its New World cousin. Herkimer diamond from this region isn’t as ‘heady’ as the original, so may be easier to work with if you have a tendency to become easily ungrounded.
The included petroleum fluoresces orange under UV light. Fluorescence is symbolic of shining a light on hidden matters, the unconscious, and light emerging from darkness.
