These fossils are approximately 55 million years old and are found in the sedementary deposits of the Fossil Syncline Lake in Wyoming, USA. The detail you can see here is particular to the Green River Formation area where two layers of very fine-grained lime mud have helped preserve not only the shape of the fish, but also the clearly visible fine detail of scales and bones.
