Origin of Name & Mythology: From the Cingalese "tourmali," the name given to colored gem zircons on the island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon). In the early 1800s (some say 18th C) it was discovered that some of the "zircons" arriving in European gem centers from the far east were actually a previously undescribed mineral. Because of it's relatively recent discovery, there are no traditions associated with it.

Additional Information

In the 18th Century Tourmaline was considered the "Stone of Wisdom". In Arabic traditions it is the stone of the sun, and as such would protect from nightmares and strengthen the heart. Cleanse often, as the crystal can absorb energy. All Tourmalines are powerful healing crystals and natural tourmaline wands are very directional, proving to be exceptional tools in the practice of crystal healing.
